I am writing in regards to the Vice-Principal position for Jens Haven Memorial, in Nain, Labrador as recently listed on the Education Canada Network job site. Please consider this package as my formal application for this position. I am particularly interested in the Labrador School District, with its unique blend of urban and rural and French, native and English immersion programs, and how my background can complement the students and staff of Labrador district #1.
In the past decade I have held a number of leadership and management positions which have provided excellent experience for the responsibilities of a Vice-Principal. I am completing my fourth year as a Senior Secondary Geography teacher in the Lewisporte/Gander School District #6 in Gander, Newfoundland. During this time I have been the acting President and secretary of the Newfoundland branch of the Canadian Geographic Society. During the summer months from 1996-2000 I helped organize and run the Youth summer programs for the Canadian Geographic Society, taking students throughout Eastern and Northern Canada on special field trips and projects for the Society. A particular highlight during these four years was taking 20 high school students, and 10 visiting seismic researchers and university students to visit the fault line research centre in the Canadian Shield in Northern Ontario.
Prior to this I spent 3 years as the manager of Employment for the St. John's Student Co-operative, a branch of Memorial University. While I was attending Memorial University I was also President of the Geographic Society on campus, helping to organize a number of events for the faculty. This experience in active learning is what propelled me to teach and organize events for the Society during the past four summers.
I graduated from Memorial University with a Bachelor's of Education in Secondary Science in 1991 and in 1990 I graduated with honours from the Memorial University, geography major. While at university and then following in my practicum and then practical experience I have developed a Lifelong learning philosophy of education. Where the school I would like to help lead is one based on a cooperative learning environment, whereby the students learn from their teachers, their peers and their parents, helping to formulate ideas and opinions based upon curiosity and experience. I am a firm believer in learning through doing and as my work with the NGS has shown me, "outside" experiences from the walls of the 8:30 - 3:30 classroom can have a life-long lasting effect on learning.
I look forward to discussing my philosophy of education and the ideas behind what my ideal school looks like with you at your convenience. My resume, practicum report and letters of reference are enclosed for your consideration for this position. My transcripts are forthcoming and will be sent directly from the University transcript office. Thank-you for your time and consideration for this position.
Sincerely,
